Clayton O. Totman was born in Conway, Mass., in 1914, the son of Francis W. and Annie B. Smith Totman. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1935 with a degree in forestry and shortly afterward joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in defense of Shanghai during the Sino-Japanese War in 1937, took part in the occupation of Japan, commanded barracks in Alaska, and served in Korea.
