Clayton O. Totman was born in Conway, Mass., in 1914, the son of Francis W. and Annie B. Smith Totman. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1935 with a degree in forestry and shortly afterward joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in defense of Shanghai during the Sino-Japanese War in 1937, took part in the occupation of Japan, commanded barracks in Alaska, and served in Korea. Later he was appointed special assistant to the Secretary of the Navy. After his retirement in 1959, he owned a tree farm in Waldoboro, Maine, and was active in many forestry and wildlife organizations. Totman died on Sept. 13, 1998.
