History files contain a few 19th century letters about the canal. Record Group 2 contains information about William O. Douglas (d. 1980), and personal collections of C.J.S. Durham, Joan Paull, Colin Ritter, and William J. Stephenson (his series includes over 2,550 color slides of the canal, 1970-1976).

The 184-mile Chesapeake and Ohio Canal operated 1850-1925 and is now operated as a national historic park by the National Park Service. Supreme Court Justice William O.
