Allegheny Portage Railroad payroll receipts, and report, 1839-1973 (bulk 1839).

The collection contains two receipts for payment for services as a locomotive fireman to Patrick Regan, 30 December 1839, and as locomotive engineer to Joseph Parks, 18 June 1839, both paid by John Snodgrass, superintendent of motive power. Includes a note from J.L. Herring, 8 April 1916, sending the receipts to the Pennsylvania Railroad office in Altoona, Pa. with genealogical information about the two men. Also, includes Sylvester Welch's report on the Allegheny Portage Railroad (American Canal Center, 1973).

The Allegheny Portage Railroad covered a 36 mile stretch up and down the sides of Allegheny Mountain between Johnstown (Cambria Co.) and Hollidaysburg (Blair Co.). Built between 1831 and 1833, the Railroad used a system of inclined planes to link the two lines of the Pennsylvania Canal.
