Variant namesHide Profile
The Allegheny Portage Railroad covered a 36 mile stretch up and down the sides of Allegheny Mountain between Johnstown (Cambria Co.) and Hollidaysburg (Blair Co.). Built between 1831 and 1833, the Railroad used a system of inclined planes to link the two lines of the Pennsylvania Canal. The canal boats were pulled by ropes, and later by wire cables (designed by railroad engineer John Roebling).
