The bulk of the Painter collection was assembled by Minshall Painter (1801-1873) and his brother Jacob (1814-1876), Quakers from Middletown Township, Delaware County, Pa. The collection includes family correspondence, business and legal papers, papers on interests and concerns of the Painter brothers, genealogical papers, and miscellaneous deeds and other papers collected by Minshall Painter. The collection is a rich source of information not only on the Painter family of Delaware County and the origins of the Tyler Arboretum, but also agriculture, social life and customs, and nineteenth century Quaker concerns.

Minshall Painter (1801-1873), a Quaker from Middletown Township, Delaware County, Pa., was an farmer, skilled mechanically, and an avid student of the natural sciences. In 1833 he helped found the Delaware County Institute of Science. Middletown Preparative Meeting (Delaware County, Pa.) was established in 12mo 1698/9. In 1827, after the Hicksite Separation in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, the meeting split into Hicksite and Orthodox branches.
