Justice of the peace dockets, 1866-1878, 1884-1899.

Three bound volumes give handwritten record of the cases coming before the Justice of the Peace. The names of the people involved, the date of the offense or transaction, the decision and the amount of the judgement or the decided worth of the property is all recorded and signed by the Justice of the Peace. The recorder's name is usually given also.

The Justice of the Peace of Schuyler County in the last half of the nineteenth century presided over cases that mostly involved settlement of debts or sale of livestock with an occasional theft or assault and battery. Wakeman Thomas was the presiding justice until 1869 and then Hermann C. Schultz heard the cases through 1878. George W. Campbell was the J.P. of record from 1884-1889 and then Henry M.
