Contains miscellaneous correspondence, 1938-1952, including information on William McMurtrie, professor of chemistry at the University of Illinois, and from John I. Hardy, animal fiber technologist for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. Also includes a world trip report, 1949, made by Von Bergen to South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, to study sheep and sheep diseases; technical reports, 1957-1971, from the Technical Committee of the International Wool Textile Organization; and various papers on wool and its thermal properties, both by Von Bergen and others. There is also a folder of biographical information, including photographs, lists of publications, etc.

The company, located in New York City, was founded in 1899 by John P., Nathaniel and Samuel Stevens as the family-controlled selling agent for fabrics produced by M.T. Stevens & Sons Co., North Andover, Mass. It sold woolen goods of M.T. Stevens and cotton fabrics from other mills and invested in a number of southern mills, including producers of synthetics. After John P.'s death in 1929, sons Robert T. and John P., Jr. took charge, with Robert T. as president from 1929 to 1942....

Von Bergen graduated in 1916 from the Technical College of Burgdorf, Switzerland, as a chemist and was connected with the wool industry since 1919. He was Director of Research, 1926-1962, at Forstmann Woolen Co., Passaic, N.J.; and a consultant to J.P. Stevens & Co., 1963-1972. He also served as the United States representative to the Technical Committee of the International Wool Textile Organization and taught woolen manufacturing at Columbia University. Julius Forstmann founded the Forstmann & Huffmann Company in Passaic, New Jersey in the early 1900s. By 1931, the company's name was changed to the Forstmann Woolen Company. Forstmann designed his own fabrics, founded the National Quality Maintenance League, and was a sponsor of the "Truth-in-Fabrics" bill passed by the Congress in 1940.
