Forstmann Woolen Company

Hide Profile

Julius Forstmann founded the Forstmann & Huffmann Company in Passaic, New Jersey in the early 1900s. By 1931, the company's name was changed to the Forstmann Woolen Company. Forstmann designed his own fabrics, founded the National Quality Maintenance League, and was a sponsor of the "Truth-in-Fabrics" bill passed by the Congress in 1940. In conjunction with the Forstmann Woolen Company, the Julius Forstmann & Company, Inc. was established as its fiscal and selling agent. Both companies were acquired by J.P. Stevens in 1957. The papers document primarily the financial operations of the family owned and operated Forstmann Companies and subsidiaries.

The company acquired the Louis Gallet Knitting Mills in 1956. Other subsidiary companies include Super-Tex, Inc., Skaneateles Teasel Company, Garfield Warehouse and Terminal Company, and the Credit and Investors Advisory Corporation, later the Economic Advisory Corporation. Both the Julius Forstmann & Company, Inc. and Forstmann Woolen Company were acquired by J.P. Stevens in 1957.
