The Andrew D. Bruce papers, 1916-1970.

Contains the following types of materials: correspondence, clippings. Contains information pertaining to the following wars: Civil War, World War I (WWI), World War II (WWII). Contains information pertaining to the following military units and organizations: Tank Destroyer Center Fort Hood Texas; 77th Infantry Division; Armed Forces Staff College; 2nd Infantry Division. General description of the collection: The Andrew D. Bruce papers include studies of tank destroyer use and his work in the establishment of the Tank Destroyer Center. Official correspondence on the Center, two histories of tank destroyers (1941-1945), accounts of their service in Tunisia, albums of clippings on the Center. WWII materials include: his service with the 77th Infantry Division, proclamations to peoples of China and Korea and maps of Okinawa. Albums reflect his visits to Trieste and Korea and his command of the Armed Forces Staff College. Some clippings of service with the 2nd Infantry Division in WWI and some of his academic writings concerning his division in WWI and others on the Civil War. Some biographies, orders pertaining to him and commendations relating to his career, personal correspondence (1918-1919) and some reports on his service in the autumn of 1918. His WWII service in the Pacific (1943-1945) and the command of the 7th Infantry Division in Korea in 1946 are reflected in a few materials and reminiscences of his subordinates. There is a large file of correspondence relating to his retirement from the Army in 1954, papers from his presidency of the University of Houston, clippings concerning the history of Fort Hood (1942-1967), letters of condolences on his death, some commission, citations and certificates are also found.

Bruce, Andrew D. (Andrew Davis), 1894-1969

General Andrew Davis Bruce was the third President and the first Chancellor of the University of Houston. Bruce became president of the University on September 1, 1954, and chancellor in December 1956. He retired from the University after the 1960-61 academic year. Bruce had served in the United States army for 37 years, serving in both World Wars, and was the governor of Hokkaido, Japan, during the United States occupation.
