[Native Son movie archive]. [1950-1951].

An archive of promotional material relating to the 1951 movie "Native Son", produced by James Prades and directed by Pierre Chenal, and starring Jean Wallace, Nicholas Joy, Gloria Madison and Wright himself in the role of Bigger Thomas. The archive is as follows: an Exhibitor's Campaign Manual for the U.K. release of the movie, containing background material on Wright, the director and stars, as well as some hilarious tips for promoting the film; twelve glossy black and white still photographs showing scenes from the movie; four of the rare color lobby cards featuring scenes from the movie; and two full-size color posters for the movie featuring the respective tag lines of "I didn't mean to kill her!" and "The Dynamite-Loaded Story of a Negro and a White Girl!" The posters are folded with some light creasing and chipping to the edges, else the archive generally is near fine."--The Richard Wright Collection catalog.

Richard Nathaniel Wright was born September 4, 1908 near Natchez, Mississippi, to Ella Wilson Wright, a schoolteacher, and Nathan Wright, a sharecropper. The story of Richard Wright's childhood, with its harrowing episodes of abandonment by his father, his temporary consignment to an orphanage after his mother became ill, and his short-lived schooling under the harsh guardianship of his grandmother have been detailed in his autobiography, Black Boy (published in 1945 by Harper & Row)....
