Michigan's military establishment formally began with an August 30, 1805 act that provided for a territorial militia. A state militia was established in 1838. Public Act 147 of 1846 completely re-organized the state militia. Public Act 198 of 1893 officially designated the militia as the Michigan National Guard. Adjutant-General of Michigan, 1865-1887; served in Mexican and Civil Wars. Born in Portney Banffehire, Scotland, Jan. 2, 1814; came to Montreal; enlisted in Fifth U.S. Regt. and was assigned to Ft. Howard; appointed adjutant general by Austin Blair; was in commission business in Detroit with C.A. Trowbridge; for short time worked for U.S.in Mexico. Died in Detroit, 1887. He was twice married.
