[Letter] 1854 Mar. 15, Sacramento City, [Calif.] to J.A. Broadus / Edwd. J. Willis. 1854.

Attempt to "present to you the interests of the Redeemer's kingdom in California and especially in Sacramento City, as connected with the Baptist denomination. I confess to you that I have become almost discouraged in my efforts to draw the attention of our mission boards in the Atlantic states and particularly the Southern Board to this important field ... You are aware that Rev. O.C. Wheeler, the first Baptist missionary under the American H.M. Board has had the pastoral care of the Baptist Church in this city a little over two years. Bro. Wheeler, though unsurpassed by any other minister of any denomination in the state for pulpit oratory, has pursued a course which has effected very injuriously the prospects of the cause in this place. He is too fond of public applause ... It will doubtless be interesting to you to know that Sister Eliza Sanford who taught in Bro. Mirrick's school and whom you baptized is stoping [sic] with us."
