Summary: Two-page letter from John B. Floyd, U.S. Secretary of War, to C.J. Faulkner, Chairman of the Committee on Military Affairs, House of Representatives, concerning the armed possession of posts in Chihuahua and Sonora, Mexico, dated December 17, 1858. He notes that the the armed possession of these posts would "add nothing to the present necessity for the increase of the army. The line of defence from the frontier of Texas to the Pacific Coast would be materially shortened, and might be so chosen ... to diminish the cost of transportation for the supplies of a very large portion of our forces, employed upon our southern border."
