Mariners' Presbyterian Church was established in 1819 by Joseph Eastburn (1748-1828), though the church was not formally organized by the Presbytery of Philadelphia until 1830. Until it was destroyed by a fire in 1963, the church ministered to sailors as well as to the city's poor and indigent in conjunction with the Seamen's and Landsmen's Aid Society.
