Dated May 15, 1837, this is a handwritten manuscript of Don Vicente Filísola's memoirs of the Texas Revolution. Bound in leather and issued in 2 volumes, the second volume includes correspondence, some of it official and military, to or from Filísola. Correspondents include Antonio López de Santa Anna, Samuel Houston, and José Urrea. Perhaps of greatest historical significance are Chapt. 1 (Battle of the Alamo), Chapt. 6 (Battle of San Jacinto) and Chapt. 8 (Itemized indictment of Santa Anna).

Vicente Filísola (1789-1850), a Brigadier General in the Mexican Army, was Antonio López de Santa Anna's second in command during the Texan Revolution. After Santa Anna's capture at the Battle of San Jacinto, Filísola was responsible for leading the Mexican Army's retreat from Texas. These memoirs may have been published as part of a personal defense campaign, as the author faced formal charges of treason and cowardice for following Santa Anna's orders to withdraw Mexican troops from Texas. ...

Jose Maria Tornel y Mendivil was probably born on March 1, 1795 in Orizaba, Veracruz, although some sources report his birth date as 1789 or 1801. As an adult he became a Mexican Army general and politician, eventually serving as Minister of War. He allied with and helped the frequent return to power of Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna despite defeats in the 1836 Texas revolution and the 1846-48 Mexican-American War. Tornel probably died in 1853, although some sources give the date ...
