Jose Maria Tornel y Mendivil was probably born on March 1, 1795 in Orizaba, Veracruz, although some sources report his birth date as 1789 or 1801. As an adult he became a Mexican Army general and politician, eventually serving as Minister of War. He allied with and helped the frequent return to power of Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna despite defeats in the 1836 Texas revolution and the 1846-48 Mexican-American War. Tornel probably died in 1853, although some sources give the date as 1860.
