Papers, 1853-1958.

The collection consists mainly of Brown's scrapbooks which include clippings of newspaper articles that he wrote as a correspondent in the Soviet Union in 1926. Other clippings concern WWI and the U.S. Army in Mexico (1916-1920). Brown's family and personal correspondence (1898-1953) includes letters from his sons in the U.S. Army during WWI. Other material includes papers relating to Butler University, the operations of the "Indianapolis News," and William Henry Smith's estate (1896-1898).

Charles Warren Fairbanks (May 11, 1852 – June 4, 1918) was an American politician who served as a senator from Indiana from 1897 to 1905 and the 26th vice president of the United States from 1905 to 1909. A native and life-long resident of Indianapolis, Ind., Hilton U. Brown Sr. graduated from Butler University in 1882. He went to work for the INDIANAPOLIS NEWS in 1881, and worked there as a reporter, editor, general manager, and vice president. During World War I he was a European war correspondent. Brown's sons Paul V., Arch A., and Hilton U. Jr. served in the war; Hilton Jr. died in service.
