A native and life-long resident of Indianapolis, Ind., Hilton U. Brown Sr. graduated from Butler University in 1882. He went to work for the INDIANAPOLIS NEWS in 1881, and worked there as a reporter, editor, general manager, and vice president. During World War I he was a European war correspondent. Brown's sons Paul V., Arch A., and Hilton U. Jr. served in the war; Hilton Jr. died in service. Brown maintained his connection with Butler, serving first as a member and then as president of the board of directors from 1903 to 1955. He was a civic and educational leader and a club man.

Hilton U. Brown (1859-1958) was born in Indianapolis and earned degrees from Butler University in 1880 and 1882. He was associated with the "Indianapolis News" for 77 years, starting as a reporter. Brown served on the board of directors of the American Newspaper Publishers Association from 1903-1935, and in 1948 became vice-president of Indianapolis Newspapers, Inc. He was a trustee for Butler University from 1885-1955, and university president for 52 years.
