Scope and content: Correspondence, financial papers, legal papers, printed materials, photographs, creative works and a map document the families of Benjamin Rush Milam and Collin McKinney from 1809 to 1940. The business dealings and colonization activities of Benjamin Rush Milam, Collin McKinney, and their associates in the 1820s and 1830s in the Wavell Colony are recorded in the correspondence and financial and legal papers. Ben Milam's correspondence, 1827-1835, concerns the Wavell Colony, his silver mine in Mexico, and his visit to England, circa 1831. Letters to Collin McKinney, 1836-1854, cover military matters, martial law in Texas, disputes over Milam's lands, and the annexation of Texas to the United States. Other correspondence includes proclamations of David G. Burnet and Sam Houston and four letters from Robert A. Milam about his experiences as a Confederate soldier and the Battle of Vicksburg. Other correspondents include Earl Stanley Williams, George Kerman, Eliza Milam, James Milam, and Jefferson Milam. The financial papers of Ben Milam consist of statements, bills, inventories and receipts from 1828 to 1834; his legal papers include printed colonization contract forms, contracts, petitions, a lease and a promissory note. The legal papers of Collin McKinney and his family are membership affidavits and certificates. Printed materials include speeches before the U.S. House of Representatives and the Texas legislature, a broadside to the inhabitants of Texas in 1835 and newspaper obituaries of Milam and McKinney family members. Creative works consist of poetry and genealogical data. The map is an 1879 Map of Texas and the Indian Territory. Two photographs are of paintings of Benjamin Rush Milam, and one is of the Collin McKinney Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, circa 1921.
