The letter is written by the President of the Century Co., Frank H. Scott. He tells Markham that his poem The Juggler of Touraine was exquisite and favorably recieved in last Christmas's Magazine with Mr. Guipon's illustrations. They would like to experient andd put it in a small booklet with pictures. He discusses price. He would like Markham's consent.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). The Century Company was founded in New York City in 1881. Century published magazines including the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine and St. Nicholas and publications such as Battles and Leaders of the Civil War. Roswell Smith formed the company and appointed Richard Watson Gilder as editor of the Century which was noted for its fiction, poetry, historical studies, and woodcut illustrations.
