Louisa Frederika Alexander Gilmer letters, 1864-1924.

This collection includes two letters from Mary Lavinia Mongin Stoddard (Mrs. John Stoddard) in Savannah, Georgia, to Louisa in 1864 and a third letter from Jacob Florance Minis in Savannah to Marie in 1924. The 1864 letters inform Louisa Gilmer of news of family, friends, and Savannah activities. Mary Lavinia Mongin Stoddard thanks Louisa far caring for her son, Albert Stoddard. Of interest in the letters are mentions of Joe Gamble and General Hugh W. Mercer, who according to Mary Lavinia Mongin Stoddard "looks like an old gray rat." The purpose of Jacob Florance Minis' letter was to send Marie photographs of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Stoddard, which he found among his wife, Louisa Porter Gilmer Minis', papers.

The Minis family arrived in Savannah in 1733. Abraham (ca. 1694-1757) and Abigail (1701-1794) Minis raised nine children, including Philip, who records indicate was the first white male child born in Georgia. He married Judith Polack in 1774 and worked as a successful merchant. Edward Telfair (1735-1807) was born in Scotland, but moved to Savannah in 1766. Hugh Weedon Mercer, Confederate officer, merchant, and banker, was born on November 27, 1808 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and died in Baden Baden, Germany on June 9, 1877. He graduated from West Point in 1828. He was commissioned a colonel with the Confederate Army when Georgia seceded; was appointed a brigadier general (1861) and commanded the post of Savannah for most of the war. Louisa Frederika Alexander Gilmer (1824-1894) was married to Jeremy Francis Gilmer from February 23, 1818 to December 1, 1883. Jeremy Francis Gilmer was a Major General in the Confederate States of America Army. Following the Civil War, the Gilmer's became very active in Savannah, Georgia, living on Bull Street and as part of the Independent Presbyterian Church's congregation.
