Mercer, Hugh W. (Hugh Weedon), 1808-1877
Variant namesHugh Weedon Mercer, Confederate officer, merchant, and banker, was born on November 27, 1808 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and died in Baden Baden, Germany on June 9, 1877. He graduated from West Point in 1828. He was commissioned a colonel with the Confederate Army when Georgia seceded; was appointed a brigadier general (1861) and commanded the post of Savannah for most of the war. He was a brigade commander under Hardee during the Atlanta Campaign (1864).

Hugh Weedon Mercer (1808-1877) was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He married Mary Stites Anderson Mercer (1812-1855) on February 5, 1834. One of their children was George Anderson (1835-1907). Hugh Mercer moved to Baden Baden, Germany, for his health and died there in 1877. George Anderson Mercer married Ann Maury Herndon (1841-1885) on October 23, 1861 in Fredericksburg, Georgia. Their son, George Anderson Mercer (1868-1940) was the father of the famous songwriter, Johnny Mercer.
