Architectural drawings, 1919-1952.

At least six unrelated projects are represented. (1) "Crystal Lake Country Club ..., S. Lapham, Jr., designer. Akron, Ohio, March 1919." Plan and elevation (2 drawings). These two drawings are the only known examples of Lapham's work to survive from the period before his partnership with Simons. (2) Two inked plans (1 drawing) by Albert Simons for two floors of a house, 16 November 1923. (3) "Pedestals for Sculpture at Gibbes Art Gallery, Charleston, South Carolina" by Albert Simons, August 1, 1923 (two designs for pedestals). (4) "Design for marker at Memorial Avenue, Charleston, S.C. Prepared for Ladies Auxiliary, Charleston Post No. 10 American Legion" by Albert Simons, 3 & 4 August 1923. (5) Designs for the Ashley River Bridge including a pier with architectural elements and various designs for lamp posts (7 drawings), 1925. (6) Miscellaneous drawings (4 items) including plans of gardens, signs, and sun dials. Two are signed by Simons and dated 1952.

Charleston, S.C. architect. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Simons was a fellow of the American Institute of Architects (A.I.A.). He served as an instructor in architecture at Clemson College and was a partner in the architectural firm of Todd, Simons & Todd. Albert Simons (1890-1980) and Samuel Lapham, Jr. (1892-1972) were Charleston architects and architecural historians. Both worked independently as architects before forming a partnership in 1920. Their partnership later expanded to include a number of other architects. A large collection of the firm's architectural drawings is held at the South Carolina Historical Society. Actor, stage designer, artist, and director. Emmett Edward Robinson was born in Ocala (Fla.) and moved to Charleston (S.C.) in the 1920s. He graduated from the College of Charleston in 1935 and received a master's degree from Yale University in 1941.
