The Marie M. Hardee Ellis collection consists of one autograph book with the date April 5, 1880 written in the front endpaper and one folder containing loose papers that were found between the autograph book's pages. Entries are in English, French, and German and include both signatures cut from documents and pasted onto the pages as well as entries inscribed directly into the book. Noteworthy signatures in the autograph book include those of Helen Keller (undated), Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1877), and President John Tyler (1841). Loose papers include autographed Savannah concert programs for sopranos, Grace Moore (1938) and Lily Pons (1941).

Helen Adams Keller (1880-1968) devoted her life to bettering the education and treatment of the blind, the deaf, and the nonverbal, and was a pioneer in educating the public in the prevention of blindness in newborns. Marie M. Hardee Ellis (ca. 1869-1950) was the daughter of John Lewis Hardee (1837-1891) and the grandaughter of Noble Andrew Hardee (1805-1867). She was also the sister of Noble Andrew Hardee (ca. 1865-1928), a Savannah musician who studied both locally and in Germany. Marie Hardee married Charles Ellis and had four children.
