Harry Herndon Critz was born in 1912 and became a United States (U.S.) Army officer, chief of staff (CoS), and commanding general (CG) of 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky; secretary of staff for Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE); and commanding general for U.S. Army, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Historical note: The First Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division was sent to Vietnam in 1965. It was the third United States Army unit to arrive. In December of 1967, the remainder of the division was deployed to Bien Hoa, South Vietnam in Operation Eagle Thrust. The 101st was the only army division ever airlifted directly into combat.
