This collection consists of a muster roll from George C. Dent's Company D of the Georgia Sharpshooters, 1st Battalion, August 31-October 31, 1863. Also included is an extract from Special Orders Number 184, dated Headquarters, Savannah, August 15, 1864, ordering Privates William D. Couper and James T. Dent of the 1st Battalion Georgia Reserves to report to Captain Joseph Manigault, Assistant General at Savannah.

The 1st Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters formed on August 15, 1862. It mustered at Camp Anderson south of Savannah, Georgia. The battalion was stationed at Fort McAllister, Georgia, in 1863. George Columbus Dent married Ophelia Troup in 1847. During the Civil War, he was the captain of Company D, 1st Georgia Battalion Sharpshooters.
