Daniel Willard papers, 1899-1942.

The collection consists of four series: Correspondence, the Stevens Commission, photographs, and biographical information. The Stevens Commission, headed by John F. Stevens, a railroad engineer who had also worked on the Panama Canal, was appointed by the Committee on National Defense in 1917. Although formally names the "United States Railway Advisory Commission," it was popularly, and in Willard's correspondence, known as the "Stevens Commission." It left Washington, D.C., in May, 1917, to assess the condition of the Trans-Siberian Railroad and determine what, if anything, the United States could do to improve the situation. The photographs include portrait shots of Daniel Willard, two photographs of his early days in railroading, and a photograph of the flowers sent to him by the Railroad Unions after he negotiated the pay cut.
