The collection consists of about 3,000 photographs, images, and negatives: color prints, color negatives, black-and-white prints, black-and-white negatives, copy prints, studio and cabinet cards, stereo views, cyanotypes, albumen prints, gelatine silver prints, lantern slides, glass negatives, and Polaroid prints, ranging in size from 2 x 3 inches to 14 x 10 inches. All are housed in C196.04 (Concourse level, Mina Rees Library, City University of New York Graduate School and University Center, the former B. Altman Building). Series 1: Buildings and 2: Streets/Avenues contain the greatest volume of subject images, particularly for Times Square, Herald Square, 34th Street, 42nd Street, and Fifth Avenue.

The Historical Photograph Collection consists of images of New York City buildings and streets, chiefly in mid-town Manhattan, an area of primary interest to real estate developer Seymour B. Durst (1914-1995). The images date from the late 19th century to ca. 1980 and include originals and copy prints. Durst collected the images and other non-print materials that complement his extensive book collection, all now housed at the CUNY Graduate Center as The Seymour B. Durst Old York Library. ...
