Saying that it is a relief to write this letter; noting that Spofford's "Cousin Fanny" [Frances Ellen Ternan] has shown him a letter from Spofford "in which reference is made to me"; explaining his interest in and respect for Fanny: "you may be sure ... that there could not live upon this earth a man more blamelessly and openly her friend than I am, or to whom her honor could be dearer than it is to me"; referring to "wild misrepresentation" and "amazing falsehood" [probably in reference to his relationship with Ellen Ternan].
