Albert Gallatin Browne papers, 1742-1884; bulk: 1861-1867.

Papers of Albert Gallatin Browne of Massachusetts, 1742-1873 (bulk 1861-1867), kept while serving as a special supervising agent of the Treasury Department in South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida during the Civil War. Browne was charged with seizing supplies and goods left behind by the Confederate Army and shipping them to New York. Papers include correspondence with the Secretary of the Treasury and other Treasury and war department officials, commissioners of customs, and others; receipts, bills, and vouchers for merchandise seized; records of confiscated cotton and other goods to be shipped north; account books; captured and abandoned property reports, and a transcription of his 1864 diary. Correspondents include his son Albert Gallatin Browne, Jr., Salmon P. Chase, William P. Fessenden, Hugh McCullough, and Nathan Sargent, among others. Also includes a collection of random papers collected by Gallatin while confiscating property and a letterbook from the National Alarm Corporation.
