Benzonia was founded by Rev. Charles E. Bailey and other men from Ohio in 1858 as the proposed site of a christian college similar to Oberlin College. The college was known as Grand Traverse College, 1863-1891, Benzonia College, 1891-1900, and Benzonia Academy, 1900-1918. The college no longer exists, although one of the buildings has become a community building. From the description of Educational enterprise, Benzonia, Michigan, 19uu. (Clarke Historical Library).
