Papers and scrapbooks, 1865,1951.

Papers, 1865-1937, include: correspondence (5 p.) from Clapp, Pontiac (Mich.), to the Burlington Liars Club, telling a tall tale about Paul Bunyan and how the Great Lakes and Mississippi and Missouri rivers were formed. This letter won him a lifetime membership in the club. Also included is a certified copy of "an Act to change the names of James Wilson, of the Township of Lyon, Oakland County, Mich., to James Wilson Clapp, Feb. 5, 1901, signed and sealed by Charles S. Pierce, Deputy Secretary of State. Receipts (2) for Mich. Southern & Northern Indiana Railraod, 1865, and Holly, Wayne & Monroe Railway Co. (1868) are also included. Scrapbooks, 1922,1951, document national politics, political cartoons, issues, pictorials, and debt; the Democratic Party; Mich. and US economics; Mich. governors, government, and politics; the 1948 Presidential Election and presidential elections and campaigns in general; Thomas E. Dewey; Pontiac and Milford (Mich.) people and events; and Detroit (Mich.) and US history pictorials. The scrapbooks are extremely acidic and fragile and are flaking.
