Agricultural scientist, teacher, humanitarian, artist, and Iowa State alumnus (1894, 1896). George Washington Carver was born ca. 1864, the son of slaves on the Moses Carver plantation near Diamond Grove, Missouri. He lost his father in infancy, and at the age of 6 months was stolen along with his mother by raiders, but was later found and traded back to his owner for a $300 race horse. Duane Isely (1918-2000), a native of Arkansas, received his B.A. (1938) and M.S. (1939) from the University of Arkansas, and his Ph. D (1942) from Cornell University. He was named an Extension Associate (1944) when he began managing the Seed Laboratory at Iowa State College (University). R.E. Buchanan (1883-1973) was a bacteriologist and administrator at Iowa State University where he also received his B.S. (1904) and M.S. (1906) degrees.
