Duane Isely (1918-2000), a native of Arkansas, received his B.A. (1938) and M.S. (1939) from the University of Arkansas, and his Ph. D (1942) from Cornell University. He was named an Extension Associate (1944) when he began managing the Seed Laboratory at Iowa State College (University). He was also an Assistant Professor (1947-1948); Associate Professor (1949-1955) and a Professor (1956-1981)in the Botany Department.
Isely was named a Distinguished Professor in 1981 and retired in 1989. His early publications reflect his interests in seed technology. He published a textbook and more than 50 papers on the topic. Isely was an active seed scientist, publishing 20 books and laboratory manuals on weeds.
