Lloyd Dwight Folkestad was born in Kasson, Minnesota, on July 4, 1894, the son of Charles and Anna Folkstad. The family lived in Sisseton, South Dakota, for a time before moving to Montana. As a young man he worked in his father's store in Lambert. He later was a railroad worker in Fairview. He married Louise Campbell about 1918.
