Lloyd Dwight Folkestad was born in Kasson, Minnesota, on July 4, 1894, the son of Charles and Anna Folkstad. The family lived in Sisseton, South Dakota, for a time before moving to Montana. As a young man he worked in his father's store in Lambert. He later was a railroad worker in Fairview. He married Louise Campbell about 1918. They had one son together, and she had a son from a previous marriage. He was a personal friend of artist J. K. Ralston, and an acquaintance of Charles M. Russell. He later moved to Tigard, Oregon. He died in Portland, Oregon, in November 1984.
