McCarty-Fisher collection, 1780-1975 (bulk 1830-1900).

This collection consists of the papers and other materials of Reuben McCarty and the Robert J. Fisher family. Materials include surveys, memorandum books, circulars, deeds, wills, photographs, newspapers and newspaper clippings, postcards, business correspondence, personal correspondence, court records, and other legal documents. Some of McCarty's business correspondence includes letters from James Taylor of Newport, Kentucky, and General Leslie Combs. The Fisher collection features one page of Fisher family genealogy and a photograph album of a missionary trip to Africa in the early 20th century.

James Taylor, the son of Col. James Taylor, was born on Apr. 19, 1769 in Caroline County, Virginia. He was educated at Rappahannock Academy. In 1788 Taylor was commissioned as surveyor of Caroline County and was made deputy sheriff. Reuben McCarty was a surveyor and County Clerk in Pendleton County, Kentucky. He was born ca. 1795, married Polly Porter in 1815, and died sometime between 1862 and 1870. His connection to the Fisher family is uncertain. Robert J. Fisher was a businessman originally from Kentucky who married Julia Holton of Covington and moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana, then to California.
