Carl Dahl was born in Kansas City, Missouri on February 29, 1912. He moved to Waterloo, Iowa in 1935 and found work at the John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works. He helped organize UAW Local 838 at Deere in 1942 and held several offices in the local union, including department steward, shop committeeman, and Local 838 president.
