Carl Dahl was born in Kansas City, Missouri on February 29, 1912. He moved to Waterloo, Iowa in 1935 and found work at the John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works. He helped organize UAW Local 838 at Deere in 1942 and held several offices in the local union, including department steward, shop committeeman, and Local 838 president. Dahl also worked to unionize 21 other companies in Iowa, as well as negotiating and servicing contracts in the region. He was active in the Black Hawk Labor Council and in the international UAW. Dahl was a supporter and associate of UAW president Walter Reuther. He also ran for State Representative and served on the Iowa state Employment Safety Commission. Carl Dahl died in 1983.
