Correspondence, 1861 and 1867. The first letter, dated Dec. 3, 1861, from Woodruff, in Pacheco (Contra Costa County, Calif.) to "Dear Cousin", discusses the purchase of land on the Sacramento River, living conditions, mining coal, and the growth and prices of crops, and cost of cattle in Calif. Also, he noted that Uncle Steven Hubbard was selling his farm and going to the Oregon gold mines. The second letter, dated April 10, 1867, is from Mrs. J.G. Woodruff to "Dear Cousin Christopher". In the letter, Mrs. Woodruff noted her homesickness, the health of her family, the prices of land and goods at home, mentioned shopping in San Francisco, and inquired about family and friends. She also noted that she had lived in Calif. for seven years by 1867.
