Family correspondence, 1876-1882.

Family correspondence, 1876-1882, mostly between Compton, Custer City (Dakota Territory), and his wife and daughter, Mary E. and May Compton, Charlotte (Mich.). In his letters, Cyrus discussed his attempts to settle in the West, gold mining, cattle raising, prices of land and goods and Indian unrest in the Dakota Territory. In Mary and May's letters, they discussed family affairs, school, and local events. A letter to May from a friend, Fred H. Pierce, mentions his having seen Pres. Grant at the U.S. centennial (Nov. 27, 1876).
