He was born near Port Huron (Mich.) on Dec. 26, 1840, one of seven children born to Dr. John and Mrs. Nancy Galbraith. After graduating from the University of Michigan Medical Dept. at age 21, Franklin attended the College of Physicians and Surgeons (N.Y.) in 1860, from which he graduated in 1861.
