The papers of Emily Tall document her research into the history of translation, publication, and critical reception of the works of James Joyce in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Materials pertain to the translation of Joyce in the Soviet Union during 1920s-1930s and during 1960s-1980s, the critical reception of Joyce's work in the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 1930s, as well as the changing attitudes towards Joyce in Soviet academia, press, and the general public from the 1960s to the 1980s. James Augustus Aloysius Joyce was born on February 2, 1882, in Rathgar, a borough of Dublin, Ireland, the eldest of ten children who survived infancy. In 1888 he was enrolled at Clongowes Wood College, a Jesuit boarding school near Dublin, where he stayed until 1891. Thereafter he attended Belvedere College, and then University College, Dublin, where he graduated in 1902 with a major in Italian. Emily Tall received her Ph.D. from the Department of Slavic Languages at Brown University. A member of the University at Buffalo faculty for over twenty years, she is Associate Professor Emeritus of Russian.
