Land patent, 1872.

Land patent for land in Isabella County (Mich.) issued to a "competent", meaning literate, Indian by order of the Secretary of the Interior, according to the treaties made with the Chippewas of Saginaw, Swan Creek, and Black River, of Michigan on Aug. 2, 1855 and Oct. 18, 1864. U.S. Grant, Pres., Z.B. Sturgens, Assist. Secretary, and C.B. Bupeten (sp?), Recorder, signed the patent on Aug. 20, 1872. The patent was recorded in the Chippewas of Saginaw, Swan Creek, and Black River v. 3, p. 178, and has its original stamp from the U.S. Land Office. A note on the back of the patent indicates that the patent was received and recorded on May 19, 1878 in Deeds book. 10, p. 489, by C. Bennett, Register of Isabella County (Mich.).
