Last will and testament, 1867.

Last will and testament, dated March 12, 1867. Louis left property to his children, Joseph and Margaret Kiwaise. He signed his will with an "X", or his mark, idicating that he was illiterate. The will was also signed by witnesses Andrew J. Blackbird and Paul Wasson. Witness Martin Wason also left his mark on the will. The men were probably all Native Americans.

Kiwaise had two children and lived in Little Traverse (Mich.). He was an Ottawa or Chippewa Indian. Blackbird (1810-1908) was an Arbre Croche Ottawa. He had a wife and four chldren and wrote several books about Michigan Native Americans, copies of which are at the Clarke Historical Library. The Clarke also has a thesis about Blackbird.
