Orderly book, 1799-1800, possibly of Maj. William Jones of the 15th Regiment. The v. is written by hand and bound in leather. It includes a partial copy of general orders, circulars, and correspondence that the regiment received, June 28, 1799-March 12, 1800. There are unidentified newspaper clippings about events of 1723 which are pasted on the last 7 p. on the v. The v. was donated by Dr. Norman E. Clarke, Sr.

The Regiment was organized in spring, 1777, at Boston and consisted of eight companies from Worcester, Middlesex, Cumberland, Essex, Berkshire, and Bristol counties. In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
