Correspondence (six letters) from Hadley, while a soldier in France, to his mother, Mrs. K. Irene Hadley in Parma (Mich.), about his trip to France convoyed by a British cruiser, his return to the States, and his prospects for a promotion to Captain, 1917-1918, undated [ca. 1917]. Letters were sent while Hadley was aboard ship, at Fort Sheridan (Ill.), and from France. One letter, dated Dec. 16, 1918, was sent to Hadley's unnamed mother-in-law from Charles W. Moore, Lt., Corps of Chaplains, about Hadley being mustered out. Also included is a letter from Hadley, at the Hotel Guardiola, Mexico, to his mother about a home and roses, dated Sept. 20, 1930. Hadley usually signed his letters as "Blaine."

Hadley was married and served with the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I. Probably in 1917, he served in the 11th Provisional Cavalry Regiment. He was also QuarterMaster of the Edward Pierce (a chartered boat) and part of the QuarterMaster C.N.A. Transport QuarterMaster unit in Newport News, Va., 1918. His exact unit is not identified.
