Collection of miscellaneous materials about Pokagon and his family, 1879, 1894, 1928-1958. Included are newspaper clipping about Potawatomi Indians, 1932-1958; a warranty deed issued to Pokagon for land in Van Buren County, 1879; a speech (typed, 2 p.) Pokagon gave at Elkhart (Ind.) on Oct. 9, 1894; correspondence between Mr. Dana P. Smith of Paw Paw (Mich.) and the Michigan Historical Commission, 1928-1940 about Pokagaon's articles; and Pokagon's 1928 article "An Indian's plea for prohibition" (modern, undated photocopy). Also included are small photographs of Pokagon and an unidentified white man. The Van Buren County land was not given under the auspices of tribal entitlement acts. Pokagon's great-grandson, Joseph Quigno, and Julia Quigno, who lived in Paw Paw (Mich.) are described in the newspaper clippings.

Pokagon, Simon, 1830-1899

Pokagon (1830-1899) was a Potawatomi Indian, the son of Chief Leopold Pokagon. Educated at Oberlin College and Twinsburg Institute, he was a gifted orator and writer. He wrote a number of articles and books about Potawatomi legends, language, and culture, some of which were produced on birchbark. A collection of his books is in the Clarke Historical Library.
