Eve Triem was born in New York City on November 2, 1902. Triem grew up in San Francisco and attended the University of California at Berkeley. She married Paul Ellsworth Triem, a writer, in 1924 and they moved to Dubuque, Iowa in 1936. They moved to San Francisco in 1956, where they resided until moving to Seattle in 1960. James Richard Broughton was raised in California and graduated from Stanford University in 1936. After studying playwriting and directing in New York, Broughton returned to California and began making experimental films, including The Pleasure Garden, which won a special jury prize at the 1954 Cannes Film Festival.
